Abstract reasoning test: finding rules without words
Abstract reasoning items strip away vocabulary, arithmetic and general knowledge, leaving shapes that follow a rule you have never been told. Your task is to work out the rule from the evidence in front of you and apply it. Because there is nothing to recall, these items get closer than most to measuring reasoning itself.
What it measures
Fluid reasoning, not accumulated knowledge
Psychometricians distinguish reasoning that works on novel problems from knowledge you have built up over years.
Abstract items target the first kind. Nothing you learned in school helps you decide whether a square becomes a triangle at the next step; you have to hold several possibilities in mind, test them against the examples, and discard the ones that fail. That is why working memory contributes so much to performance on these items.
This also explains why abstract items are called relatively culture-fair. They lean less on language and formal schooling than verbal or numerical items do. Less does not mean not at all — exposure to puzzles, comfort with screens and test familiarity all still influence results.
The rule types
Six rules that cover most abstract items
Once you can name these, unfamiliar items stop feeling arbitrary.
Progression
A feature increases or decreases in steady steps across a row — one more dot each time, a shape growing, a line lengthening.
Rotation
A figure turns by a fixed amount at each step. The trap is a mirror image, which looks similar but cannot be reached by rotating.
Distribution
Each of three features appears exactly once in every row and every column, so the missing cell is whichever one is absent.
Addition and subtraction
Two figures combine into a third, either merging their elements or cancelling the parts they share.
Constant in a row
One attribute stays fixed along a row while another varies. Separating the fixed from the varying attribute is most of the work.
Alternation
A feature flips back and forth — filled, empty, filled — so position in the sequence determines the answer.
Harder items combine two or three of these at once — a shape that rotates while its fill alternates and its count progresses. The method stays the same: isolate one attribute at a time instead of trying to see the whole rule in one go.
Approach
How to work through an abstract item
- 1. List the attributes. Shape, count, size, fill, orientation, position. Name them before looking for the rule.
- 2. Find what stays the same. Constants are easier to spot than changes and they narrow the search immediately.
- 3. Read one direction first. Establish the rule across a row, then check whether the columns agree.
- 4. Predict before you look. Decide what the missing cell should be, then find it among the options. Reading the options first invites the plausible-looking distractors to lead you.
- 5. Eliminate on one attribute. If the answer must contain three elements, discard everything else at once rather than comparing options whole.
Practising the format makes you faster at reading items. It does not raise underlying reasoning ability, and a score that rises purely through repetition is a practice effect rather than improvement — see accuracy and limits.

Each item carries its own difficulty and discrimination parameters, so answers are weighted rather than simply counted.
Getting a hard item right moves your estimate more than getting an easy one right, and missing an easy item costs more than missing a hard one. Scoring follows a two-parameter item response model, which also produces the uncertainty around your estimate — that is where the confidence interval comes from.
