About

An IQ test that admits what it doesn't know

Brain Rate exists because the honest version of an online cognitive test was missing. Most sites hand you a confident three-digit number after a handful of questions. That number is not measurement, it's marketing.

What we set out to build

A test that uses item formats from published cognitive-ability research, scores them with a documented model, and reports the result the way a psychometrician would: as an interval, with the margin of error stated out loud. If the test doesn't know something precisely, it says so rather than rounding uncertainty away.

Why the range matters

A range is more useful, not less. It tells you where your ability plausibly sits and how confident the test is. It also stops you over-reading small differences between attempts — if two ranges overlap, nothing meaningful has changed. The detail is on the accuracy page and the methodology page.

How we make money

The short test is free and always will be, with no email required to see your score. The longer adaptive assessment is a single payment — no subscription, no upsell drip, no selling of personal data. That's the whole business model.

Principles

What we hold to

An honest range instead of a made-up number

Results are reported as a confidence interval, because that is what the measurement supports. A single figure would look more certain than any online test can be.

Research-based item types

The questions follow item formats used in published cognitive-ability research — matrix reasoning, verbal analogies, number series and spatial rotation.

A methodology you can actually read

Scoring, calibration, reliability and limitations are written down in full, with references. Nothing about the score is a black box.

An adaptive full assessment

The paid form adjusts item difficulty as you go, which is how a longer test buys you a tighter range rather than just more questions.

Clear about what it is not

Brain Rate is a self-knowledge estimate. It is not clinical, not diagnostic, and not for employment, legal, medical or placement decisions. We say so on every page.

Try it yourself

The free short test takes about 8 minutes and your result appears the moment you finish.

No card required. No email needed to see your first score.
